- "Minneota," according to "Minneota -- a centennial history," is an Indian word for "too much water," or "much water."

- Gustav Jacobson became the first mayor of Minneota when it was incorporated in 1881.

- The Minneota Mascot was first published in September 1891.
- The first wedding in Minneota was a double wedding. Nils Jaeger married Christine Dahl, while Ole Dahl married Amalia Michaelson. (Ole and Christine were cousins.)
- The Big Store was built in the summer of 1901, the same year the first cement sidewalk was laid.
- Minneota's first traffic accident was a wagon-buggy collision in August 1893. The city's first stop sign was erected in August 1929 -- 36 years later.
- Commencement exercises were held for the first graduation class of Minneota High School on May 27, 1904.
- MHS's first basketball game was a 28-7 loss to Marshall on January of 1912.
- The first electric lights were turned on in Minneota on August 5, 1913.
- Minneota's Rex Theatre opened in January 1920. The first movie was "Daddy Long Legs," featuring Mary Pickford. The first sound motion picture was "Broadway," shown on New Year's Day, 1930. The theater is now the Rehkamp Funeral Home.
